An accessible word processor for screen readers, low vision and keyboard users
Retroprose meets WCAG 2.2 AA, in the free edition. Screen readers read your document as ordinary text, every action works by keyboard, menu or touch, and the text can be made larger.
Screen readers
Your document reads line by line as ordinary text, as it would in any text box. Status line messages, such as a search result, are read out without moving you from the text. The menus, the spelling box and the thesaurus are read as menus. Spell check, on Ctrl+F2, reads out each word it does not know and up to five suggestions.
Low vision
Text goes from 14 to 28 pixels, and the whole screen can be small, medium or large. One of the five fonts is made for low vision. Blue, green, amber and paper all meet the contrast WCAG asks for, and paper gives black on white.
Keyboard, mouse or touch
Every action has a key, a menu item and a button on the key bar. Esc then Tab always moves out of the text, and nothing holds the focus. Nothing flashes, and if your device asks for less motion, the cursor stops blinking and the scanlines go.
Questions
Does Retroprose work with a screen reader?
Yes. Your document reads as ordinary text, the status line messages are spoken, and the menus, spell check and thesaurus are read as menus.
Can I make the text bigger?
Yes. The text goes from 14 to 28 pixels, and the whole screen can be small, medium or large on top of that. Both are on the View menu.
Do I have to pay for these features?
