Retroprose

A keyboard-first word processor

Retroprose has the function keys of the late 1980s and the shortcuts of today. Every action also has a menu item and a button, so the keyboard is never the only way.

The Retroprose editor with a pull-down menu open, each item with its own underlined letter and its key beside it.
Each menu item shows its key.

Function keys

F2 searches, F6 is bold, F8 italic, F10 saves and F12 starts a block. Shift, Alt and Ctrl add more, such as Ctrl+F7 for a footnote. Print the key template to put above your keyboard.

Modern shortcuts

Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+S and Ctrl+F work beside the classic keys, and Shift with the arrow keys makes a block. Key settings, on the Tools menu, lets you change any key. Your keys follow your account to every device.

Menus and the key bar

Browsers and laptops keep some keys for themselves. When a key does not work, the menu item and the key bar button do the same job. Esc closes every menu and box, and Esc then Tab moves out of the text.

Questions

Can I use a word processor without a mouse?

Yes. Every action in Retroprose has a key, from saving and searching to footnotes and exports, and Esc then Tab always moves you out of the text.

What if my function keys do something else?

Every action is on the menus and the key bar too, and most have a Ctrl key as well. You can also change any key in Key settings.

Do the usual shortcuts work?

Yes. Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+F, Ctrl+Z and the other keys of today's word processors work.
