A retro word processor in your browser
Retroprose is a DOS word processor online, with grey text on a blue screen, function keys, pull-down menus and reveal codes. There is nothing to install, and it saves itself.
Four screens
Grey on blue, green on dark green, amber on dark brown, or black on white paper. Add scanlines, like an old monitor, if you want them. Five monospaced fonts, including a 1980s VGA screen font.
Keys and codes
F6 is bold, F8 italic, F2 search, F10 save and F12 Block. Today’s keys, such as Ctrl+B and Ctrl+S, work as well. Alt+= opens the menu bar, and reveal codes shows [BOLD], [Head 1] and [HRt] under your text. F5 opens List files, with dates in dd-mm-yy and a disk bar.
Autosave, offline and export
Retroprose saves two seconds after you stop typing and keeps older versions. It works with no connection, and sends your changes when you are back online. Export to Word, PDF, OpenDocument, HTML, plain text or Markdown.
Questions
Is Retroprose an old DOS program?
No. It is a new word processor that runs in a web browser, made to look and feel like the DOS word processors of the late 1980s.
Do the old function keys work?
Yes. Some browsers and keyboards keep a few function keys for themselves, so every action also has a modern key, a menu item and a button on the key bar.
Is it free?
Yes. The floppy disk edition is free, with 1.44 MB of room, about 240,000 words. There are no adverts and no card to enter.
